The Algarve is a real paradise for those who can't live without bright sunshine and smooth sandy beaches. It's the most southern region of Portugal and Europe's favourite holiday destination. There are about 100 beaches washed by the Atlantic Ocean and due to the maritime shelf and water currents the sea temperature can often surprise you with its warmth even in winter months.
Albufeira is the tourist capital of the Algarve. It offers luxury holiday resorts, golf courses, nice restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. This place used to be a small fishing village, but the Great Earthquake of 1775 destroyed most of the old town, including its castle. But still there are enough sightseeing left, like the new Virtual Archaeological Museum, the Municipal Art Gallery and a small museum exhibiting Ming ceramics. Inland venturing can open you pristine greenery of countryside with unforgettable smell of almond, fig, orange and pine trees.
In Albufeira visitors try hard not to be tempted to spend all the money they have by seafront stalls and countless shopping malls. The town's main shopping plaza is the Modelo Centre in Ria de Municipio, north of downtown. The lively Algarve Shopping Complex in Guia features a wide selection of clothes, shoes and jewellery. Though if you want genuine local souvenirs look for local markets and independent shops where they sell mats made from rush or corn husks, woven baskets and some glazed terracotta ceramics.
